At first...not so much. Minecraft Alpha ends Minecraft Bukkit Plugins the second Beta begins. (The whole Greek bit is generally semantics, but still helpful.) Every switch the signal from Alpha is a change to Beta, and most players they won't even know the gap until Notch adds something big, much like the Halloween update in October (of times to produce a Halloween-based change!).
The end of Alpha is being paved with changes towards the Survival Multiplayer aspect of the game. Fans who only play single player are not affected by this transitional period before changes made on the game set out to affect single player directly (more than likely after Beta is live, or 'activated'). In a more general sense, games in Alpha are believed buggy and just barely playable, while Beta (being more detailed Release).
For any game this at the start of development, aside from this type of indie sensation mostly created by one lone guy, it's remarkably stable already, but Beta will probably improve upon its strengths further.
